Dear Readers and Their Grownups,

In our last family reading gift to you, we learned that Tommy is full of questions and wants to learn the answers. He’s not alone! Seems everyone in Missy’s Pack–including Missy herself–knows there are a lot things they don’t know, but want to learn. And that’s when Aubrey has an idea! She says,

“You know what?” Aubrey broke the silence. “You know what we need? We need a school!”

And so, Missy and her pack–including Tiger the Cat–are going to start a school!

This short story gift from Miss Missy’s School: A Pack of Farm Dogs Starts a School is the sixth gift from Miss Missy’s School. You can find the five previous ones listed here. For each, there’s a link to the blog post, and a link to a pdf that you can print for family reading time.

Let’s get to it! Oh! Don’t foget to share this. Everyone should read Miss Missy’s School, don’t you think? Thank you!

XIII: Recess? Never Heard of It

AS YOU CAN IMAGINE, Bebe was none too keen on the idea of a school. “I don’t want to go to school,” she cried. “School’s no fun! School takes all the fun out of learning. I don’t want to go to school,” she stomped her paw. “Why do we have to have a school anyway? I can learn things on my own. I don’t need a dumb school to learn things. I can count, you know— zero-one-two. I don’t…”

“Ruff?!? Ruff!?!” asked Rock.

Of course I know what a school is!” Bebe said getting more and more agitated. “I’ve heard of them. I’ve seen pictures. They’re horrible,” she moaned. Here Bebe dramatically threw herself on the floor and began flailing around on her back wailing, “I know what they are. They are horrible places! I don’t want to go to school! Please, pleeease, please don’t make me go. Please, don’t make me!”

“Bebe, did you know there’s recess at school?” asked Missy. Missy had work to do. She did not have time for Bebe’s theatrics.

“Recess? Never heard of it. What’s recess?” asked Bebe properly righting herself.

“Well,” Missy sighed as she looked up from her notebook filled with little squiggles. “If you went to school you could have recess. It is the time during the school day when all of the students go into the school yard and run and play.”

“No way!” shouted Bebe. “You can play at school? Why didn’t you tell me? Why doesn’t anybody ever tell me anything? Nobody ever tells me anything. Wow! Does Tommy know this? Wait until I tell Tommy! He won’t believe it! You can play at school! Why didn’t anybody tell me? Hey Tommy! Tommy! You won’t believe it!” Bebe yelled as she burst through the porch door and ran off to find Tommy who was down by the orchard working on his plans for an experimental garden.

“Missy,” Gilbert chuckled, “You forgot to mention the part about sitting quietly in your seat before recess. That may be a legitimate problem for our Beatrix.”

“I’m sure both she and Tommy will be just fine, Gil. They’ll be fine. They’ll love school,” Aubrey said assuredly to the others, and to herself made a note to give a little special something to Bebe.
