“A Letter from Marica to you”

I hope you make some new friends here at Miss Missy’s School! Before you begin reading the story, though, I must tell you something. Some of your new friends have foibles— minor shortcomings.

Gilbert likes to say, “As someone once said…” and then quotes a famous person. But he never tells us who said what! I looked up Gilbert’s quotes, found out a bit about the person who said what, and included that at the end of the chapters in which the quotes appear. Gil’s other minor flaw is that he sometimes talks as he did in his hippy days. Can you dig it?

Today’s quote is from “Chapter XIII: Recess? Never Heard of It.” Click on the link to read an excerpt from the chapter. I wish I could excerpt the entire chapter. It begins with Bebe having a little fit because she doesn’t want to go to school. She thinks they are horrible places. She dramatically throws herself on the floor and begins flailing around on her back wailing,

“Please, pleeease, please don’t make me go. Please don’t make me!”

“Bebe, did you know there’s recess at school?” asked Missy. Missy had work to do. She did not have time for Bebe’s theatrics.

“Recess? Never heard of it. What’s recess?” asked Bebe properly righting herself.

And then… Missy tells her about recess!

“No way!” shouted Bebe. “You can play at school? Why didn’t you tell me? Why doesn’t anybody ever tell me anything? Nobody ever tells me anything. Wow! Does Tommy know this? Wait until I tell Tommy! He won’t believe it! You can play at school! Why didn’t anybody tell me? Hey Tommy! Tommy! You won’t believe it!” Bebe yelled as she burst through the porch door and ran off to find Tommy who was down by the orchard working on his plans for an experimental garden.

After that, the Big Dogs get back to work–and there was a lot of work to do. Gilbert makes a suggestion, and Aubrey asks, “Do you really think it will come to that?”

Gilbert replies:

“Well, probably not, My Dear. But one can never be too well prepared for insurgencies. As someone once said, ‘chance favors only the prepared’.”
