A very important question is asked and answered at the end of Chapter XI: Questions, Questions, Questions in Miss Missy’s School. But I can’t tell you what it is! (Though you may be able to guess.)
This is the chapter where the Big Dogs– including Tiger the Cat– tell their stories about Tommy’s insatiable curiosity. Aubrey is a bit embarrassed and apologizes to everyone. “Tommy should know better than to waste your time like that,” she says.
Rocky says “Ruff,” and Tiger agrees. “It’s wonderful that Tommy’s mind burrrns with currriosity.”
After everyone has told their stories, Aubrey shakes her head and says, “He has so much to learn.” And she stops and thinks for a minute before continuing,
But come to think of it, so do I. Jest the other day I had to ask Miss Caroline who Queen Victoria was. She seems like such a nice lady. Wish I knew more about her.”
To which Gilbert replies sweetly,
My Dear, as someone once said, ‘Learning is not attained by chance, it must be sought for…’ Perhaps we can find a book about Victoria in Marica’s library.
Rocky, of course, offers to help. He knew where Marica keeps her collection of English history books.
